James Prescott Joule, William Thomson, et l’équivalent mécanique de la chaleur.

Au début des années 1840, Manchester était une ville industrielle très active, qu’on aurait pu nommer centre industriel de l’Angleterre, ce qui à cette époque revenait à dire centre industriel du monde. James Prescott Joule, jeune propriétaire d’une brasserie, marchait en direction de son usine. Enfin, il s’agissait encore de l’usine de son père, mais il en avait pris la responsabilité il y a quelques années déjà. Alors qu’il marchait dans la rue, il semblait absent, il y avait à cela une bonne raison, bien qu’elle ne fût pas évidente : sa brasserie marchait bien, et en fait la bière qu’il produisait était l’une des favorites de la ville. C’était tout autre chose qui laissait perplexe, voire troublait Joule …
